IMPORTANCE OF VITAMIN C AND THE SIGNs & SYMPTOMS OF VITAMIN C DEFICIENCY

Introduction

Vitamin C is called ascorbic acid and its water soluble vitamin it can  easily soluble in water. Chemical formula of Ascorbic acid is C6H8O6. Active form of ascorbic acid is Ascorbate.

It is essential for human body and should not  produced by human body like other vitamins therefore it produced by external source. It has many function e.g wound healing, collagen synthesis, immunity, iron absorption, antioxidant and many metabolic activities. It can easily destroy by heat, light and oxygen.

Function of Vitamin C

1. Collagen synthesis

★ Collagen contain two amino acid

Proline and lysine

★ Vitamin c is essential  for collagen synthesis

★ Bloods vessels

★Gums

★ wound healing

★ Bones

★ Skin

★vitamin synthesis two enzyme

* Prolyl and lysyl hydroxylase

★ Vitamin C add OH group in proline and lysine this addition make collagen stable and strong

2. Iron absorption

★Vitamin C is very important  for the absorption of  iron Fe in intestine

★ vitamin C convert ferric ion(Fe 3+)  into ferrous ion( Fe 2+) this is easily absorbable in small intestine.

3. Immune system support

★ Vitamin c boostup immunity

★Increase WBCs production

★ Increase Neutrofil function

★ protect immune cell from oxidation

★ Enhance skin integrity for first defence of immunity

4. Antioxidant function

★ It is powerful antioxidant

★ Which provides H ions to free radical to neutralize them( free radicals can damage protein, lipids and DNA) that's why their neutralization is most important if they will not be neutralized they should damage protein, lipid and DNA

★ Protect all cell from oxidation

★ Regenerate Vitamin E that is another antioxidant

5. Neurotransmitter synthesis

★ Vitamin C generate several neurotransmitter

★ It convert dopamine into norepinephrine

★ That is more important for mood

, brain function and stress response.

★ Vitamin act as a cofactor for this convertion

6. Carnitine production

★ Vitamin C is important for carnitine production that is essential for fat metabolism

7. Synthesis of hormone

★ It synthesize some hormone like Adrinal (cortisol)

★ Help in the production of catecholamine production e.g  adrenaline

★ Support adrenal gland function during stress

Sources of vitamin C

★Oranges

★Lemon

★ Grapefruit

★Limes

★Papaya

★ Kiwi

★  Strawberries

★  Guava

★Spinach

★Tomato

★Broccoli

Requirement of Vitamin C for human body

Pregnant= 85 mg day

Lactating= 120 mg day

Adult Men= 90 mg day

Adult Women =75 mgday

Smokers= +35 mg extra

Deficiency  with sign and symptom of vitamin C

1. Scurvy

It is a condition cause by the deficiency of vitamin C IN Which the connective tissue become weak  which cause poor wound healing and bleeding. As we know that vitamin c is essential for collagen synthesis that is important for blood vessels strength ,wound healing , iron absorption. When vitamin c will  unavailable then blood vessels become fragile and bleeding from gums occur.

Sign and symptoms of scurvy

★ Loos of appetite

★Weakness

★Irritability

★ Fatigue

★ Joint pain

★Irritability

★ Loos teeth

★ Bleeding gums

★ Swollen and painful leg

★ Poor wound healing

★ Anemia for more about anemia visit this sitehttps://healthduhs.blogspot.com/2026/02/what-is-anemia-what-are-sign-and.html

★ Depression

2. Bleeding in scurvy

Bleeding occur in scurvy happen because there is no synthesize of Collagen this cause making fragile blood vessels and other connective tissue as a result bleeding occur happen from their.

These are at high risk of  Bleeding in scurvy

Alcoholics

Smokers

Dialysis patients

Poor diet

Treatment of Vitamin C deficiency

★ For adult the suppliment of vitamin C  200-500 mg three times  per/day

★ For severe case 1000mg of supplement recommended  per/day

★ For children 100-300mg/ day is recommended

★ After taking supplements of vitamin C the signs and symptoms increase within 24 hours and it recovers in  weeks.
