What is oral cavity? Is stomatitis is a disorder of oral cavity?

Introduction:
Oral cavity or mouth is that part  of body which is  present in cranial region. It is responsible for the digestion of food or it is the entrance for all type of nutrient that are requirement   for human body we ingest food with the help of our hand into the mouth where mouth cut the food into piece and transfer it toward the main functional area where it get further digested and absorbed in the body. Without entrance for food it is difficult to  set a goal for food to digest and absorption.
Anatomy
It is started from lips it means lips are present Infront of the oral cavity and the behind of oral cavity oropharynx  a part of pharynx is present.
When we talk about inferior and superior part of oral cavity on the superior area of oral cavity is hard and soft plate are present that make the roof of mouth. On its inferior area  tongue,

Mylohyoid muscle and  geniohyoid muscle are present.

That make the floor of oral cavity
layers of oral cavity
when we talk about the layers of oral cavity it has four layers.
1-      Serosa
It is the  most outer  layer of  oral cavity  which is make-up of skin that is responsible for providing protection to oral cavity through physically or chemically in physically protection it protect us from any type of sustainable trauma and also protect our mouth from foreign particle that are in the form of microorganism it traps them before attacking on our body. It defend us from microorganism through its defending system which is controlled by the immune system of human body.
2-      Muscularis
It is the second layer of oral cavity which is toward the inside of mouth that is made-up of muscle that provide a movement to mouth which help in digestion  and chewing of food with out these muscles it is totally difficult for us to chew food. The second thing is about muscles are it provide an attachment for the bones that are present around the mouth without there attachment it will be difficult for them to move and help in chewing food.
3-      Submucosa
It is the  third inner layer of oral cavity which contain blood vessels, lymphatic vessels and nerves that are responsible providing nutrient for the oral cavity, backflow of extra fluid and nutrient and last providing a control for that area respectively.
4-      Mucosa
It is the inner most layer of oral cavity which has further three sub-layers.
a-      Epithelium
It is the inner layer most layer  mucosa and oral cavity that contain Stratified squamous epithelium and  Keratinized or non-keratinized cells.
b-      Lamina propria
It is made-up of connective tissue which contain blood cells, immune cells and lymphatic cells.
c-       Submucosa
It contain salivary gland, blood vessels and nerve and also it is layer between mucosa and submucosa

What is stomatitis?

It the inflammation of mucosal layer oral cavity which include tongue, soft plate, hard plate, cheeks, lips, gums and floor of the mouth. The inflamed area will be swollen, red and painful.
Causes of stomatitis
There are several causes of stomatitis
1-      Viral infection
Stomatitis may  be caused by any virus e.g  Herpes Simplex Infection if any one get touched with this viral and does not wash hand properly it an opportunity for virus to develop an infection.
2-      Bacterial infection
Stomatitis may  be caused by any  bacteria e.g  Candida species Infection if any one get touched with this viral and does not wash hand properly it an opportunity for bacteria  to develop an infection.

3-      Fungal infection
Stomatitis may  be caused by any  fungi  e.g  Streptococcal  Infection if any one get touched with this fungi  and does not wash hand properly it an opportunity for this fungi to develop an infection.

4-      Nutritional deficiency

Stomatitis may happen due to the deficiency of nutrient e.g iron deficiency, vitamin B-12 deficiency and folate deficiency.

for more about vitamin deficiency https://healthduhs.blogspot.com/2026/02/role-of-vitamin-b12-and-its-related.html
5-      Systematic disease
Stomatitis may develop due to
·         Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
·       Celiac Disease
·        Behçet's Disease
6-      Drug related cause
7-      Allergy

Any sensitive agent that we are taking through mouth the defence system of mouth declared it dangerous and attack on them later on they developed in the form of stomatitis.
8-      Traumatic cause
When the mucosal layer of mouth damaged due to any reason e.g drinking hot liquid, hot food, chemical that cause the cutting of mucosa and any thing that cut the mucosa of mouth later on they develop in the form of stomatitis.
Type of stomatitis
symptoms
·       Oral ulcer
·       Pain
·       Buring sensation
·       Bleeding
·       Redness
·       Difficulty in swallowing
·       Halitosis ( bed smell from mouth )
Diagnosis
·       History
·       Physical examination
·       CBC
·       Vitamin level
·       Biopsy

 Types of stomatitis
There are three type of stomatitis
1.                  Aphthous Stomatitis (Canker Sores)
It is the most common type of stomatitis which  is a non-contageous disease.
These are small round ulcer
White or yellow center with red boarder.
This type of stomatitis is caused by the immune deficiency , folic acid deficiency, vitamin D deficiency, iron deficiency and last one is it happen due to emotional stress.
Symptoms

·       Burning sensation for more about nervous system https://healthduhs.blogspot.com/2026/05/what-is-nervous-system-and-how-it-is.html
·       Difficult while eating
·        Difficult while speaking
 Treatment
The treatment will be decided by the caused in this condition  if it happen due to any nutritional disorder in that case first treat the nutritional disorder we give supplementary of that nutrient and the second reason is when it happen due to stress we decreased the level of stress.

2-    Herpetic Stomatitis
it is the type of stomatitis which is caused by Herpes simplex virus  and it is contagious disease( it can transfer from one person to another if avoided from hygene).
                     Symptoms
·       Multiple painful blister
·       Swollen gum
·       Fever
·       Difficulty in swallowing
Treatment
This type of stomatitis is caused by the virus here we used antiviral against the virus
For getting relief from the pain we use pain relief gel.

3-      Denture Stomatitis
·        It is the type of stomatitis  which  is caused in those peoples who wears denture because bacteria attack in the gums directly or infection due to other microorganism. wearing denture day and time also cause denture stomatitis. The bacteria which caused this type of stomatitis is  called Candida albicans.
Symptoms
·       Redness under the denture
·       Sometime no pain
·       Burning sensation
Treatment
In this type stomatitis is caused by the bacteria than we used antibacterial drug and also use pain relief gel.
Take special care of your mouth during this type.

4-      Angular stomatitis
It is type of stomatitis which is caused by the Fungal infection,  Bacterial infection, Vitamin B deficiency  and Iron deficiency in which  around the mouth and lips that will be tight and difficult to move that conditioned is developed by any of the agent.

Symptoms
·        Bleeding
·       Redness
·       Pain
·       Cracks around the lips and mouth
Treatment
In this type of stomatitis if the condition is  developed due to virus, bacteria pr fungi on the basic of species we decide medicine.
Prevention
·        Take care of oral hygiene
·       Take care of hand hygiene
·       Use proper edible or drinkable items
